5 Bad Oral Habits to Break

May 01 2017

Posted by

The key to keeping a healthy mouth is to prevent plaque build up. Here are five bad habits that we at Garden Dental suggest you break:

1. Not Brushing regularly

Some of us are guilty of "forgetting" to brush but brushing is one of the easiest ways to prevent plaque. Use toothpaste with fluoride and brush softly on all surfaces twice a day.

2. Not Flossing

While brushing is a great habit, there are nooks and crooks that brushing can't get to. By not flossing between the teeth, you create a happy environment for plaque to stay. Flossing daily prevents plaque from building up in between teeth and at the gum line.

3. Eating Candy bars & Other Sweets

Do you have a sweet tooth? Some of us do too, and we know it's difficult to resist but candies, sugary drinks and other junk foods make sugar stick to our teeth. Bacteria feed on the sugar and cause plaque build up. Next time you're thinking of picking up that candy bar, think twice!

4. Not eating your Fruits & Veggies

Did you know that some fruits and vegetables actually help keep plaque away? Carrots, cucumbers, apples, and other raw fruits and vegetables can do that. For those wearing braces, you may still eat these foods. Just make sure you cut them into smaller pieces so they don't break off the brackets.

5. Avoiding Dental Visits

Unfortunately, plaque can still develop even if you floss and brush your teeth daily. That's why it is key to visit your general dentist twice a year or as suggested by your dentist. Seeing your dentist regularly minimizes your chances of getting cavities or losing your teeth when you're wearing braces. At Garden Dental & Orthodontics, we strive to make everyone comfortable and happy, so come pay us a visit!

Kicking off these 5 bad habits will make your mouth as healthy as can be!
