Teeth Whitening Procedure

A white, dazzling smile gives the impression of warmth, youth, happiness, vitality, and radiant health. It creates an instant visual impact on the people you meet, which is why it is important that you consult with our cosmetic dentists to identify the best tooth whitening treatment for your case.

If you’re in Spruce Grove Alberta and the surrounding locations of Stony Plain and Parkland County, and looking for a way to whiten your teeth, it is best that you start with a professional dental checkup at our dental clinic, Garden Dental & Orthodontics, instead of heading to the nearest shopping mall or cosmetic counter in search of tooth whiteners.

We will assess, diagnose, and treat any pressing dental health concern and advise you on the different options to safely and effectively achieve whiter teeth. You should bear in mind that each case of tooth discolouration is unique. Stains caused by the use of tobacco or consuming certain foods can be addressed differently from those caused by injury, antibiotic treatment as a child, injury, or other causes.

It is important that you start with a diagnosis to avoid wasting your time and money, since whitening only works on natural tooth enamel – not restorations such as veneers, crowns, tooth-coloured fillings, or other bonding materials.

In-office dental whitening procedure

At Garden Dental & Orthodontics, we offer a range of professional teeth whitening options to choose from, though the process typically follows a standard set of steps as outlined below:

  • Cleaning the teeth:
Before you even start looking for teeth whitening treatments, you should first get your teeth professionally cleaned to remove all surface staining and accumulated calculus. In some cases, professional cleaning may dramatically improve the appearance of your teeth such that bleaching is no longer needed.

  • Identifying the pre-treatment tooth shade:
In order to assess the effectiveness of the whitening process, you should document the pre-treatment shade of your teeth for comparison purposes.

  • Isolating the teeth:
Professional teeth whitening systems typically use peroxide whiteners that are caustic and irritating to soft tissues. In some cases, they can cause damage to your gums, cheeks, tongue, lips, and even your eyes and face if exposed. Isolation is usually achieved through the use of dental dams.
  • Applying the whitener:
After all the preparations are done, we will apply the hydrogen peroxide whitening agent, which is usually in the form of a gel or thick paste. It is generously painted on the teeth being treated.

  • Activating the whitener:
With in-office treatments, activation is achieved through the use of a laser or bleaching light. For zoom teeth whitening, the zoom light will be used to penetrate the teeth being treated to break up the stains and activation.
  • Waiting for it to take action:
In-office bleaching takes about 60 to 90 minutes depending on the length of preparation and bleaching products being used. With zoom, the light is applied for 15-minutes for a total of three sessions, which means that the procedure is complete in about 45 minutes.

After the treatment, we’ll provide you with after-care tips to prolong the effect of the results.

Teeth whitening is one of the most economical ways to improve your smile. If you prefer home-based bleaching options, we can help you find the safest and most effective teeth whitening product for you.
