Orthodontic Treatment Procedures

When you have crooked or crowded teeth, or even a misaligned jaw, orthodontic treatment can help straighten or move them into the right position. This will dramatically improve your appearance and the way your teeth bite together, and make it easier for you to maintain oral hygiene.

At Garden Dental & Orthodontics, we provide our patients in Spruce Grove Alberta and the surrounding Stony Plain and Parkland County areas with orthodontic treatment so your mouth can look and function better. This treatment usually entails wearing removable or fixed braces, along with tooth extraction and perhaps some jaw surgery.

Are you a candidate for orthodontic treatment?

When you come to our clinic, our orthodontists will assess your teeth and mouth to identify whether orthodontic appliances will be beneficial to you. Depending on the results of the first consultation, which will include a full dental and medical history assessment, a clinical exam, special x-rays, and models of the damaged teeth, we will create an appropriate treatment plan for your case, or recommend another treatment option.

Some of the cases that can be treated with braces or orthodontics include:

  • Overbite – also known as “buck teeth” – characterised by the upper front teeth sticking out, too forward over the lower teeth
  • Crossbite – failure of the upper teeth to come slightly in front of the lower dentition when you bite normally
  • Underbite – a situation where the lower teeth are too forward or the upper teeth are too far back, giving you a “bulldog” like appearance
  • Open bite – when there is a gap between the edges of your front teeth when your rear teeth bite together
  • Spacing – gaps that develop in your mouth due to missing teeth or small teeth that don’t fill up your mouth
  • Misplaced midline – an unusual case of the centre of your upper front teeth failing to line up with that of your lower front teeth
  • Crowding – when you have too many teeth to fit in the dental ridge

Orthodontic treatment procedure

There are many types of fixed and removable appliances that can be applied in orthodontic treatment to help move misaligned/crooked teeth, retrain muscles, and influence the growth of your jaws. These orthodontic devices work by exerting a continuous but gentle pressure on your teeth and jaws for a period of between 6 and 24 months.

For fixed appliances, we may recommend:

  • Braces – consist of bands that are attached around the teeth to support the appliance, brackets that are fixed to the front part of the teeth, and arch wires that connect these two and exert tension on the teeth
  • Special fixed appliances – appliances attached to the teeth to control tongue thrusting or thumb sucking
  • Fixed space maintainers – used to keep the space where a baby tooth is prematurely lost open until the adult tooth erupts

Removable appliances include:

  • Removable space maintainers – keep spaces between teeth open
  • Aligners – alternative to conventional braces for adults
  • Splints – jaw repositioning appliances to train the jaw to close in the proper position
  • Removable retainers – help prevent teeth from shifting
  • Lip and cheek bumpers – help to relieve pressure exerted by the cheek and lip muscles on your teeth
  • Palatal expander – plastic device used to extend the upper jaw arch
  • Headgear – help to adjust the jaw position

The benefits of Orthodontic Treatment

Crooked teeth and misaligned jaws make it harder to maintain oral hygiene, increasing the risk of tooth loss due to decay and periodontal disease. Additionally, misaligned teeth and jaws exert more pressure on the chewing muscles, which can lead to headaches, shoulder, neck and back pain, and TMJ syndrome. If you’re not confident about your smile, this could also negatively impact your social and career life.

Fortunately, our skilled and experienced staff can help you fix this. Some of the reasons to consider orthodontic treatment include:

  • To improve the health of your teeth, gums, and mouth
  • To improve the appearance of your smile and face
  • To improve function – make it easier to chew
  • To improve the longevity of your natural teeth
