Cosmetic Dental Bonding Procedure

At Garden Dental & Orthodontics, we provide our patients in Spruce Grove Alberta and the surrounding areas of Stony Plain and Parkland County with a wide range of options for improving your smile, including teeth bonding.

Actually, cosmetic tooth bonding is one of the simplest dental restoration procedures we have. The process involves applying a tooth-coloured resin to your cracked, chipped, or discoloured tooth and hardening it with a special light so it bonds to your natural tooth, repairing the flaw.

Teeth bonding can also be used to:

  • Repair decayed teeth by filling cavities with composite resin
  • Improve the appearance of stained teeth
  • Change the shape of your teeth
  • Close gaps between teeth
  • Replace amalgam fillings
  • Make teeth longer
  • Protect an exposed dental root caused by gum recession

There are two types of bonding for teeth:

  • Direct composite bonding – The composite material is directly applied to the tooth surface and sculpted for a minimally invasive dental makeover. These restorations are also referred to as direct composite veneers.
  • Adhesive composite bonding – Here, a restoration is attached to the damaged tooth using an adhesive. Examples include bridges, crowns, and porcelain veneers, where the tooth is prepared through etching; a putty-like resin applied to the tooth and molded to the desired shape; and then the restoration is hardened using a special curing light.

Dental bonding procedure

When you have a dental problem, it is important that you schedule a consultation with a dentist who will help you determine the best solution for your case. During a consultation with Garden Dental & Orthodontics, we start by conducting a thorough assessment of your teeth and gums. X-rays may be involved depending on the severity of the damage.

We will then discuss the nature of your problem, and identify whether bonding will resolve the problem. Besides chipped tooth bonding, the procedure can be recommended for cracked teeth, decayed teeth, short teeth, tooth discolouration, gaps, and other minor problems.

The process of tooth bonding involves three key steps:

  • Preparation – Anaesthesia is not necessary except when the bonding process is for filling a decayed tooth. Pre-treatment preparations including selecting a composite resin colour and planning the procedure based on the cosmetic problem being addressed.
  • The actual bonding process – The process starts with etching or roughening the tooth surface and applying a conditioned liquid in order to ensure that the bonding material adheres to the tooth. Afterwards, the tooth-coloured resin is applied to the site, moulded, and shaped to the desired shape. A special UV light is then passed over the putty-like resin to harden it as it is being moulded. When the material is sufficiently hardened, we’ll trim and shape the restoration and polish it so it resembles your natural teeth.
  • Completion – The entire bonding process takes between 30 and 60 minutes per tooth.

Bonded teeth should receive the same level of care as your natural teeth in order to maintain a bright and healthy smile. Good oral hygiene practises include brushing your teeth at least twice a day, flossing every day, and visiting your dentist for routine check-ups and professional cleanings.
